There's a kind of romance about Taba. With the Middle East on one side and Africa on the other, it feels like a focal point, and somewhere that's got to have played its part in history. In fact, it's never been much more than a stopover on the caravan route and a border crossing for travellers from Israel. But the reds and golds of the ancient Sinai mountains, the stunning blue waters of the Gulf of Aqaba and the desert landscapes of nearby Jordan immediately conjure up images of sheikhs, camel trains and veiled princesses. What's more, the illusion won't be shattered by rows of British pubs or fast food joints. Taba's bars, restaurants and discos are pretty much confined to the hotels, so you can enjoy the splendid Egyptian sunsets just as Lawrence of Arabia would have done. What that means is, apart from sunset-gazing, the activities on offer in Taba are mainly hotel or water-based. However, that's hardly a problem. It's the way most visitors like it. This is one of those places that you come just to chill out. First and foremost, there's the scuba diving and watersports, some of the best to be had on the Red Sea Riviera. In addition, most hotels have excellent sports and leisure facilities, while up in Taba Heights there's an 18-hole championship golf course and a casino. Away from the beach you can go on a desert safari and have a Bedouin dinner under the stars. Not to mention being within relatively easy reach of some fantastic heritage sites, like the Lost City of Petra and the Pyramids of Giza near Cairo. On the other hand, if you're feeling deprived of shops and nightlife, you can always hop over the border to the lively Israeli resort of Eilat, where you'll find all the facilities of a cosmopolitan seaside resort.
