An introduction to A Casa Vecchia
A Casa Vecchia is for those in search of stupendous views, glorious walks, relaxing sea-bathing, flowers, birds, history, contact with French and Corsican-speaking neighbours, and plenty of places of interest within reasonable driving distance. About fifteen minutes' drive south from Farinole is St Florent, whilst to the north is spectacular Nonza. Across on the other side of the Cap, the 'vieux port' and 'citadelle' of Bastia are fascinating but little visited, whilst the Nebbiu and Desert des Agriates offer other opportunities for exploration.
The lovely fitted kitchen is very well equipped and positively inspires a little culinary creativity, the roof terraces are the perfect place for late breakfasts (you can get fresh bread from the baker who passes daily), languid lunches or a pre-dinner drink as the sun sets, and Corsica's finest wine comes from the cellars of the nearby village of Patrimonio.
The vista from A Casa Vecchia, over the rooftops of Farinole to the Gulf of St Florent is mesmerising, yet is even lovelier if you walk up to the abandoned monastery on the hillside above, and the two roof terraces, linked by a bridge, are the ideal spot to enjoy it especially when the sun sinks down behind the distant Punta Mortella.
A Casa Vecchia's roof terraces, stairs and different levels are part of its charm, as is the stepped approach to the house with the last 50 metres only possible on foot.
