An introduction to Nea Kydonia

Wrapped in unspoilt, cushiony-green countryside, yet just five kilometres from buzzing Chania Town, Nea Kydonia has just the right balance of laid-back and lively. A region stretching along Crete's north coast, its landscape is all silvery olive groves and vineyards that sweep down to a Kodak-worthy coastline. Here you'll find cove after cove scalloped along the shores. There's Kalamaki's pillow-soft sands where loggerhead turtles come to nest, the lagoon-like waters of Agioi Apostoli beach, and Chrisi Akti's secluded hilly dunes. And for watersports like jet-skiing, snorkelling and kayaking, make sure you head to Stalos. But this place isn't all about beaches - save some time to discover Nea Kydonia's countryside, too. It spreads out in every direction, with orange groves and winding lanes that twist down to the coast. The best way to discover this part of Crete is to hire a bike. That way, you'll really be able to get up close and personal to the countryside. Look out for sea pines, pink oleanders and mulberry trees – the latter produce big juicy berries that are perfect for mid-bike ride snacking. Or head out on a stroll – it's another great way to see the sights. One of the best routes is the Samaria Gorge from Omalas, which takes in Alikianos with its Byzantine church. With stony walkways weaving between huge rock-faces, it makes for some spectacular scenery. But it's popular, so if you want to get the most out of it, set off early in the day. And once you've worked up an appetite, head to Kalamaki or Stalos for lively tavernas and restaurants. Expect plenty of traditional Greek dishes like mousaka and mezes.
